Craps-Systems and Strategies
Craps has more ways of playing than anyone could dream of. Everybody tells you to do something different! The best bet on the crap table is the pass line bet. The house has only a 1.41 percent edge on that bet. If you take advantage of the true odds option, you cut this edge down to 0.84 percent. If you are a beginner; this is the only way to play. Of course, you can play don't pass for approximately the same percentage of risk, but for a beginner it is a lot more fun when you are shouting for the shooter to make his point rather than waiting quietly for him to seven out !
Three-Unit Betting System
I attempted to explain the various ways to place and make bets on odds in the game of Craps. The bets discussed at that time were pass line and come bets. I mentioned that in order for a bet on five or nine to be effective for odds, the bet had to be for an even dollar amount (to receive a payoff of three to two). I also mentioned that odds bets on either six or eight had to be for the full $5 in order to receive a true odds payoff of six to five. That's all well and good if you want to play for the $5 minimum bets and are willing to bet $6 on the five or nine. What about the "smaller" bettor? How can he place bets that will be effective and yet not be so high as to force him out of the game? What about the two-dollar crapshooter? Or even the 25ยข players in Las Vegas's small casinos? Don't they count?
The answer to these questions is yes, they do count. The casino wants their action just as badly as it wants the high roller and his $100 bets. They have "created" the three-unit betting system. In this instance, "system" is a misnomer since three-unit betting is more of a strategy than a system.
Three-Unit System
What the player does is simply place three units (the value of the chip is not important) of chips onto the pass line. If a seven or an eleven is tossed, he wins even money. So far there is nothing new here. However, as soon as the shooter tosses a point number, the advantage to Australia casino players using the three-unit system becomes very apparent.
When the point number tossed is a four or a ten, the player can bet three units at true odds for a payoff of two to one when he wins. When the point number is a five or nine, the player is permitted by the casino to place four units at true odds, for the correct payoff of six units (three to two, or six to four) when he wins. And finally, when the point number is a six or an eight, the player is allowed to bet a full five units at true odds for a maximum payoff of six to five, when he wins.
The advantage to the player is in gaining the ability to make a relatively small initial bet, and then have the freedom to bet to the fullest for true odds. This is particularly so in the case of the six and the eight, where the odds bet is almost twice the initial bet. This same method of slot betting can be used when playing in the come area. Simply place the three units into the come box. As soon as a come point is established, hand the dealer the correct number of chips for a bet "on the odds." |
